Canon 7D HDR Custom Settings – Video Tutorial

I recently shared some Canon 7D HDR bracketing tips. Below is a video tutorial to help demonstrate how I use the custom mode buttons on the Canon 7D to save my preferred HDR settings. If you are not familiar with the term “HDR”, check out my HDR Tutorials and Examples.

This also was a very well done tutorial. I did not need it as I knew those settings already but I watched it anyways as you do a really good job with explaining and showing it in a short clip. Hope to see more from you :)

This saved me $329! I was debating purchasing the Promote system for HDR work but I do it so infrequently that the expense made me ill. I knew there would be a way, thanks!

That is a great idea! I just started experimenting with half stops instead of thirds for my wildlife photography after reading a great tip to stop down a half to bring out contrast from Moose Peterson in his 'Captured' book. I'll have to give this a try on my next HDR shoot :)

A thought on this. I took what you were talking about and I think I got an extra stop of info out of it.

Set-up is similar. Still 2 stop brackets. I used custom function (C.Fn I,1) to have apertures increments in half stops instead of thirds. Then with the auto exposure bracket, set C2 to +.5 with 2 stop bracket and C3 to -5 with 2 stop bracket. This gets me exposures at +2.5, +1.5, +0.5, -0.5, -1.5, -2.5. I figured HDR will make up for the fact that a single “Perfect” exposure isn't availible, and I get a half stop more bracket in both highlights and shadows without the duplicate 0 frame.

Great tip, found it very useful. Funny how reading the manual just don't get it. This is much easier.

Awesome tutorial. The custom functions have been a mystery to me and I've been missing a step. Your video just saved me hours of frustration. Thanks a lot…

Great tutorial! Thanks Ken. I only came across your blog today and just realised that I've been following your HDR work on Flickr for sometime. Very impressive HDR stuff! I'm just starting out with HDR so looking forward to future posts regarding this technique.
